Leaky valve stem seals

Question : MY 2001 Toyota Camry emits black exhaust smoke when first started in the morning but clears up soon after and remains clear for the rest of the day.

What is the likely cause of this and is there anything that can be done to prevent this?

Answer : IT is likely that the valve stem oil seals are worn and require replacing.

The symptoms that you describe are typical. Oil drips down the valve stems, past the seals when the vehicle is at a standstill, or under heavy acceleration when the pressure in the inlet tract is low.

The cylinder head must be removed from the vehicle in order to gain access to the valve seals.

Considering the amount of work involved, it is more economical to carry out a complete cylinder head overhaul at the same time.
