Timing chain

Question : Which one is hardier ? Timing belt or timing chain ? Which is better for fuel consumption ?

Answer : As previously mentioned, it depends very much on the engine designer.

The chain drive is very positive, almost never fails and lasts almost for ever. Its biggest disadvantage is that it is noisier and costs more to produce.

The belt is very much quieter but must be replaced a regular intervals and if not maintained or inspected regularly can fail without warning and cause extensive engine damage.

In terms of fuel consumption, I cannot see any difference between the two.
