Tappet sound from CBX bike

Question : I replaced all the 16 hydraulic tappets of my Honda CBX 750P motorcycle a month ago. However, there is a sound every time I start the bike in the morning. But after five minutes on the road, the sound disappears. I was told the pump which brings the oil to the engine was not functioning. Thus, insufficient oil makes the tappet sound. Is this true?

Answer : You may be right. For the hydraulic tappets to work, there must be sufficient oil pressure and if the oil pump or the hydraulic tappet guides are worn, you would get this "clatter". Try using a heavier weight oil, i.e. if you are using 10W - 30, switch to a 20W - 50, and the slightly higher viscosity may solve the problem without having to pull out the pump.
