State of bearings

Question : HOW do we verify whether a bearing is good or not without putting it back into the wheel?

Where can we get these bearings checked and get a written report?

My service manager doesn't know how to check the bearings.

Answer : I am assuming that the bearing has been removed and you wish to inspect it.

If that is the case and if it is a tapered bearing, look at the rollers.

There should be an even look on the roller faces without marks or chippings on the surface.

Looking at the bearing races, you should also see a smooth surface without any marks.

With ball bearing sets, you should wash the bearing and when it is clean and dry, just shake it and if you hear a lot of looseness then there is quite a lot of wear.

Also, by holding the inner and outer races and trying to move them, if there is movement then the bearing is worn and needs to be replaced.
