Buy a car

Irritating sound

Question : My car is a 1991 Mercedes E300, When I bought it, it was five years old and had clocked 45,000 miles. Initially, the ride was pleasant and quiet, but over the years the car produced a muffing sound and it got louder as I drove up on high ground.

The car is now 15 years old and the speedometer reading is 150,000 miles. My mechanic says the irritating sound is normal for a car this old. Will a change of the whole exhaust system and any other parts of the car bring back the quiet ride?

Answer : I suppose that you will need to check the whole exhaust system for leaks and whether the muffler is internally damaged, such as broken baffles. You may also need to check if the exhaust manifold is leaking at the gasket or is even cracked. There is no reason for the engine to get noisier, and nothing be done about it unless your mechanic knows something that he does not want to tell you because of the cost, etc.
