| Polishing woes Question : My car is white in colour, and I polish
it every three months, but unfortunately after one month, I can see water
stains on the roof, bonnet and boot. My friend's white car does not have
this problem.
Answer : There is a difference between polishing and
waxing. When the paintwork of a car starts to look dull, one needs to give
it a good clean-up followed by what is called polishing. In this, we use a
polish that contains a small amount of abrasive that cuts into the paintwork
to remove a thin film of the top coating that has dulled and contained
ingrained dirt, etc. Following this, a protective coating usually containing
a wax (like carnauba wax), is applied and rubbed into the paintwork.
Very often, people keep applying wax to the paintwork and hope that it
will shine but if the paint is already dulled, no amount of wax is going to
make it shine. Regarding the water stains, maybe you need to look at the
polish you are using and try a different brand. Have a look at the label and
make sure you are buying the correct product. |
