Sooty spark plugs

Question : I have written. to you before, and I received advice on the causes of my 1991 Proton Saga consuming engine oil even after changing the piston rings and grind valve. The engine is still consuming engine oil because the engine has not been checked by the mechanic. Now, I have another problem. I have to change the spark plugs every 3,000km because they get covered with black soot (the mechan ics called it carbon). One mechanic attributed the cause to the carburettor, and another mechanic said it was the engine causing the problem.

Answer : If the deposit is black but dry, it usually means that your fuel mixture is too rich. If it is black but oily, then it is a clear indication of oil consumption and you will need to find out where the oil is coming from -- the pistons and rings, or the valve guides. The sooty spark plug may not be related to your heavy engine oil consumption.
