Ignition timing

Question : I HAVE bought a secondhand 1983 Toyota Corolla 1300GL.

Can you please let me know the basic ignition timing for this car? This information is not indicated in the Owner's Manual.

Answer : Strange that the ignition timing is not given in the handbook. You should look for it in the maintenance section as it usually would be there.

Anyway, I do not have the actual timing specs for this engine but you can start at 3 to 5 degrees BTDC (before top dead centre) with the vacuum hose disconnected and plugged. The final figure will be within a couple of degrees of that and you can test it on the road.

If in 4th gear and under load the engine is 'pinging', then reduce the advance by 1 or 2 degrees.

If it does not 'ping', then increase by 1 or 2 degrees.

The final figure will be the highest advance without 'pinging'.
