Question : WHAT is the function
of O/D ( overdrive button ), L and 2nd gear position in AT cars ?
The O/D button is very much like the 5th gear in manual transmission cars where
the output shaft of the transmission is rotating faster than the engine.
It is used when the vehicle is cruising at a relatively high average speed
and with this gear, the engine speed is kept low in relation to the vehicle
speed and so there is lower fuel consumption and less wear and tear.
L and 2 in an auto transmission are similar to 1st and 2nd gears in a manual
transmission and are used when one needs to drive at a constant speed under
difficult conditions and one does not want the transmission to be shifting up
and down, as when driving on a winding road.
