Driving in O/D mode

Question : Recently, during a wet evening, I got stuck in a jam in my Perdana V6. The moment the traffic started moving, I engaged my gear to 'Drive' and my car did not move at all even when I accelerated a few times. After several attempts of changing from "D" to "N", and vice versa, the car started jerking and luckily it moved smoothly after that.

1. Is this an early sign of gearbox problem? Is there any leaking of gearbox lubricant or is it due to heavy rain that resulted in water leaking into the gearbox?

2. What is the effect to the gearbox if I keep changing the 'O/D' mode based on the speed limit? Did this lead to the above problem? I drive in overdrive mode all the time and do not change gears to' neutral' even in traffic jams. So far, so good.

Answer :

1. I do not think you have a gearbox problem. I think your problem is with the gear shift linkage, Basically, the gear shift moves a shuttle valve that puts the trans- mission in the proper mode and if it is out of adjustment, it may not shift properly. Get someone to have a look at the shift adjustment underneath the car.

2. I do not see any problem with shifting in and out of the O/D mode unless there is something wrong with the electric shift at which time it may not shift into O/D at all. The transmission is designed to work that way and so it should not be the cause of the drive problem.
