Double clutching
Question : WHAT is double clutching ? Is it good ? What is the
advantages ?
I read somewhere that double clutching will prolong the life of your gearbox.
How does it do so ?
Answer : Double clutching came about in the days of "crash" gearboxes
when there was no such thing as synchromesh and one needed to match gear speeds
in order to shift down or else there would be a great deal of gear grinding and
sometimes inability to even affect the shift.
In later years, even when synchronisers came into use, double clutching was
used a lot in competition in order to get smooth downshifts while braking into
corners.
Today, most competition vehicles use sequential gearboxes that shift so fast
that double declutching is no longer used.
On road cars, people who double declutch probably do ti to hear the sound of
their noisy exhausts !
