Low pick-up

Question : My second-hand Toyota Seg 1.6 (1994) is performing well. But there are some minor problems.

1) The car has a low pick-up and struggles when driving through hilly roads. Even the third gear is not effective. This happens even when the air-con is off.

2) The rpm meter isn't stable. Sometimes during start, the engine rev is very high.

3) The car sometimes jerks when driving between 20 and 40km/h. This usually happens on the first, second, third gear. I tried using fuel injection cleaner but there are no changes.

Answer : The problem with used cars is that quite often one does not have the history of the car and getting to the bottom of the problem can sometimes be hit-and-run. From the sound of it, you have a carburetion problem and the best thing is to get it looked into by someone who is familiar with fuel injection systems. You could be having problems with the air mass sensor, injectors, feed pump, cable harness and even ignition system. What the car needs is to be put on a harness/EFI checker to eliminate all problems in that area, or else you would be spending a lot of money trying all types of solutions.
