| Change absorbers in pairs
Question : THE rear driver's side shock
absorber on my 1982 Volvo 244 GL
is leaking and I have been advised
to fit a replacement.
My mechanic insists on changing the shock absorber on the
other side even though it is still in
good shape. Do I really need to
replace both at the same time?
Answer : YOUR mechanic is correct and you
will have to spend money on two
new shock absorbers.
It is extremely dangerous fitting a
single shock absorber since uneven
damping on two sides will result in
unpredictable handling, especially on
wet and slippery surfaces.
Although the shock absorber on
the other side may look undamaged,
it would have worn to a certain
degree. This may be unnoticed to
you since the reduction in damping
occurs slowly and over a long time. |
